SOME FACTS ABOUT OUR COUNTRY:
Guatemala is the largest country in Central America with an area of approximately 108,890
km2. It is bounded on the north and west by Mexico, on the east by Belize and the
Caribbean Sea, and on the south by Honduras, El Salvador, and the Pacific Ocean. The
official language is Spanish.

University Professor, Director of several national and foreign companies, and
ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs.
OVIDIO DAVID PARRA VELA with 18 years of professional practice, University
Professor, specialized in Industrial Property matters.
ANNA MENENDEZ GONZALEZ who holds the position of Administrative Manager
of the Industrial Property Division, with studies in the United States, France and
Switzerland.
JORGE CABRERA HURTARTE with more than 16 years of professional practice,
University Professor, specialized in labor laws, and former Sub-Secretary General of the
Government (1994-1996).

Trademark Law:
Trademark registration gives prior and exclusive right to its owner. Priority derives from the
date and hour the trademark application is filed. For the countries which are a party of the
Central American Convention for the Industrial Property Protection (Guatemala, Honduras,
Nicaragua and Costa Rica) is six months.
Guatemala is a party to the General Interamerican Convention for Trademark Protection
of Washington of 1929, wherein the term of trademark priority is not stipulated.
Invention Patents:
Applications for registration of national patents or confirmation of foreign patents and
industrial designs. The patents which protection is requested may be of process or product,
and also may be requested simultaneously.
